Tragedy an introduction



👉 It's a gift of ancient Greece. The term tragedy refers to a drama of serious or sorrowful character with a fatal or disasters conclusion.
👉In other words, tragedy is a play of elevated theme and diction with  an unhappy ending.
👉There are six constituent parts of a tragedy :plot, corrector, diction,  spectacle and song. However plot is the most important part because it involves action. 
👉It is the soul of tragedy. Tragedies can be classified into two main categories:
 classical tragedy and romantic tragedy.
👉The first tragedy in English was 'Gorboduc' written by Norton and Sackville in 1561. It was a classical tragedy.
👉Webster's 'Duchess of Malfi'(1614) is romantic tragedy.

There are some important terms related to a tragedy:-


Catharsis:- It is a feeling of pity and fear that leave the reader or spectator in a state of calm of mind ,all passions spent.

Hamartia:- Tragic flaw or fatal flaw in the character of hero and it leads to his Doom and death.

Peripeteia:- A sudden change in the fortune of the hero from good to bad or high to low.

Catastrophe:- The end of the tragedy is called catastrophe.

Poetic justice:- It is giving of reward and punishment in proportion to one's virtuous or evil deeds.
